Shrikhand is wonderful straight from the bowl, but a little thought in how you serve it can turn it into the highlight of a meal. Here are five ideas, from the most traditional to quick modern twists.

1. Shrikhand with hot puri

The classic. Soft, puffed puris served hot alongside chilled Shrikhand is a much-loved combination in Gujarati and Maharashtrian homes. The contrast of warm and cool, and of plain and sweet, is the whole point.

Tip: Bring the Shrikhand out of the fridge just as the puris come off the stove so it stays cold.

Works best with: Elaichi, Kesar or Kesar Elaichi.

2. As part of a Gujarati thali

In a thali, a small katori of Shrikhand balances the spice of the shaak, the tang of the kadhi and the saltiness of farsan. If you are hosting, a thali with Shrikhand feels instantly festive.

Tip: Plan roughly 80–100 g per person when Shrikhand is one of several dishes.

3. With fresh fruit

Spoon Shrikhand into a bowl and top it with chopped fresh fruit: mango in season, pomegranate seeds, or sliced banana. The fruit adds freshness and colour.

Works best with: Elaichi, which lets the fruit shine, or Rose, which pairs beautifully with pomegranate.

4. Layered dessert cups

For a weekend treat or a party, layer Shrikhand in small glasses with crushed biscuits or granola and chopped nuts. Repeat the layers and finish with a few saffron strands or pistachio slivers.

Tip: Assemble no more than an hour or two before serving so the biscuit layer stays crisp, and keep the cups in the fridge until then.

Works best with: Kesar or Dry Fruit.

5. Quick Shrikhand tart shells

Fill ready-made tart shells or small pastry cups with Shrikhand just before serving and top with chopped pistachios. It is an easy, elegant dessert for guests with almost no effort.

Tip: Fill at the last minute so the pastry doesn't soften.

Serving tips

  • Serve it chilled. Take Shrikhand out of the fridge only shortly before serving.
  • Use a clean, dry spoon to scoop out what you need, and return the rest to the fridge straight away. See how to store Shrikhand.
  • Garnish simply. A few saffron strands, pistachio slivers or a pinch of cardamom powder are enough.
  • Small bowls look generous. Katoris or small glasses make even modest portions feel special.
