How to Store Shrikhand Safely

Shrikhand is a chilled dairy dessert. These simple habits keep it fresh and safe from the moment it arrives until the last spoonful.

Shrikhand is made from curd, so it needs the same care as any chilled dairy dessert. A few simple habits will keep it fresh and safe.

Refrigerate it straight away

Put Shrikhand in the refrigerator as soon as it arrives or as soon as you have made it. Don't leave it on the counter while you unpack other things.

A common food-safety guideline is not to leave perishable foods out of the fridge for more than about two hours in total, and for less time in hot weather. In an Ahmedabad summer, aim to keep it out for as short a time as possible.

Keep it covered

Store Shrikhand in its sealed container, or in a clean, airtight container. This stops it absorbing other smells from the fridge and keeps the surface from drying out.

Always use a clean, dry spoon

Scoop out only what you need with a clean, dry spoon, then put the container back in the fridge straight away. Avoid putting a used spoon back into the container, and avoid leaving the whole container on the table during a long meal.

How long does Shrikhand last?

There is no single answer. It depends on how the Shrikhand was made, how fresh the curd was, and how it has been stored. Always follow the guidance from whoever made it. When you order from us, ask us on WhatsApp how soon to enjoy your order.

Serving at a gathering

  • Keep the main container in the fridge and refill serving bowls as needed.
  • For a buffet, set serving bowls over a larger bowl of ice.
  • Return leftovers to the fridge promptly. If a bowl has been out for a long time on a hot day, it is safest not to put it back with the rest.

Taking it with you

If you are carrying Shrikhand to someone's home, use an insulated bag, ideally with an ice pack, and refrigerate it as soon as you arrive.

Can you freeze Shrikhand?

Freezing can change the texture of dairy desserts, and Shrikhand may become grainy or watery after thawing. If you want to try it, freeze a small portion first and see whether you like the result.

Signs it is past its best

Shrikhand naturally has a gentle tang. Discard it if you notice:

  • A sharply sour or unpleasant smell
  • Any mould or discolouration
  • A fizzy taste or unusual texture

If in doubt, throw it out.
